Mam tom is a good dipping sauce with drinking foods along with lots of VN dishes.
There are many types. Some very good and some very strong in different ways.
You mix it up to lighten the taste, and you don't straight out eat pure mam tom.

Please don't torture them with Vietnamese weird foods like Mam Tom , Mam Ruoc , Hot Vit Lon , Thit Cho , Cha Ruoi ,Thit Ran , etc…Let them try Bun Cha , Bun Thit Nuong , Banh Xeo , Hu Tiu , Banh Canh Cua , Bun Rieu Cua , Bo La Lot , Com Tâm , Bo Cuon Mo Chai , Banh Cuon , Banh Trang Nuong , Pho , Bun Bo Hue , Gio Cha , Heo Quay , Vit Quay …But definitely don't make them eat crazy foods that even most Vietnamese people don't like . How long will they stay in VN for ? Make them visit the country from South to North like you did with your parents . Hope they will enjoy their first time trip in our country . Stay safe buddies .

I'm a Vietnamese, but I am not a fan of this food either.
Some (like Sean K) will be addicted to Mắm tôm but some (like Mathew) gonna hate it so much but if you keep eating Mắm tôm, your taste gonna change and you will find it going very well with a lot of foods
