google flight is not good, it doesnt account what the fees are for baggage or what the baggage allowance is. total waste of time because these are flights only.

#2 is a hit or miss. Reason is, a majority of times the layover flight will actually be more expensive, especially if it is a longer lay over or if you are switching planes. It also depends on the mid flight stop location. Many businessmen would schedule these types of flights back when there was more traveling salesmen, and their intent was to have a meeting at the one or two stopping points.

FYI airline terminology
A "Direct Flight" is a flight with a stop over. (some stop overs will NOT let you off the plane if it's timed for p/u passengers only.)
Non-stop is just that. There are no stops.
Back to direct flights, some flights require you to get off and reboard another plane for the next leg of your trip. (will work for your trip hack!)
