It's actually not a myth that the prices are different. I received a different price for the same carrier and time when I booked one way vs roundtrip. It was cheaper to do it one way.
Allegiant is the only budget airline i fly because i live 20 minutes away from Sanford airport and have family in Hagerstown,MD and love to spend a week every year in the summer at Niagara Falls,NY…Spirit and Frontier is not my style..
I will give you my tip since i have been flying for over 50 years..I only book with airlines that allow you to make changes without a penalty..for example,I booked my ticket in February with United to fly from MCO=IAD= CDG in July on Polaris,paid $3,900…I checked the fare everyday and saw it go up a cpl hundred dollars and back down a few times..but never under $3,900 until one day in early May…BAM….$3,200 for the same exact flight…I cancelled right away and re-booked the same flight,$700.00 was refunded back to my CC right away..and United makes it so easy to do online…I had the same experience with Jetblue last year,but i used my points instead…the points to fly became less and was refunded my points…July is peak season to Europe and so many airlines are flying that route,and we now have a few low cost foreign airlines like French Bee…Nordic Air..Euro Wings…Icelandair…

Just flew to Phoenix on Allegiant. It was $527 total for 3 of us after paying for the seat selection and a carryon bag for each of us. On United the cheapest flight I saw was $800 for one person. Southwest was $330 for one person but it's a 2 hour drive to Tulsa to catch that one
